Otto the Great was crowned as Emperor by Pope John XII at Saint Peter's Basilica (Rome) in 1962. Otto had previously appointed his son Otto II as co ruler of the Kingdom of Germany. Upon his coronation as emperor, the Kingdoms of Italy and Germany were unified. This newly established realm would be known as the "Holy Roman Empire".
