If the whole line is JL, then JK+KL=JL
JK:5x+8
KL:4x+4
5x+8+4x+4=84
Get all like terms on one side
5x+8+4x+4=84
-8 -4
5x+4x= 72
9x=72
x=8
Plug it into the equation
5(8)+ 8= 48
4(8)+4= 36
———————
84
So x=8
JK=48
KL=36
